Just as Reiki promotes relaxation and stress reduction in people, it can be used for those same purposes in pets. Similarly, Reiki for pets can be performed in-person or from a distance. And while pets can’t verbally tell us about their personal experience with Reiki healing sessions, many pet owners report that their animals are calmer and/or demonstrate healthier behaviors after a session. Whether your animal friend is experiencing physical or emotional issues, Reiki may be able to help with the healing process.

Can Reiki Be Used on All Types of Pets?

Relaxing Iguana

The short answer is yes. However, the type of Reiki used, in-person as opposed to distance, will depend on the animal in question. Some animals are used to being touched and have little to no anxiety around strangers. With these animals, in-person Reiki may be just fine. On the other hand, distance sessions are preferred for animals who aren’t usually handled or those who get skittish around strangers. Ultimately, one of the goals of Reiki is to promote relaxation. So the Reiki session should be conducted in such a way or place so as not to cause or exacerbate any uneasiness.

When Is Reiki Used on Pets?

Reiki can be beneficial to your pets, regardless of their physical health. As previously noted, it helps to increase relaxation and reduce stress, which can help to improve any problem behavioral issues. Reiki can assist with pain relief, which is ideal whether your animal has been sick or undergone surgery. Many owners also seek out Reiki to provide comfort for pets who are terminally ill and nearing the end of their lives. Of course, Reiki should not be used to replace traditional veterinary care. It should only be used as a complementary therapy.
